To understand what can happen to our waste, it helps to know the different kinds of waste we create.

First, there’s waste from our homes. This is the stuff we put in our bins every day. Things like food waste, empty packets, old newspapers, plastic bottles, old clothes, and even broken things like toasters. Some of this, like food and paper, can break down naturally. Other things, like plastic, metal, and glass, need special ways to be turned into something new.

Then we have waste from businesses. This comes from shops, offices, and restaurants. It could be cardboard boxes from orders, leftover food from your favorite eatery, or paper from an office. It’s often similar to what we throw away at home, but there’s usually a lot more of it.

Waste from factories is another type. This comes from making things in industries. It can be leftover materials from production, chemicals, or even metals and plastics. Some of this can be harmful, so it needs to be handled carefully.

Finally, there’s waste from building and knocking down things. This includes materials like bricks, wood, metal, and concrete.

Now that we know the different types of waste, let’s talk about giving this waste a new look, For Today we will be focusing only on: PLASTIC.

We all know plastic is everywhere, right now in your rooms, your waste bins, even in your backyard, I can bet if you look around you there’s a bottle or two there, I’m I right? or am I more right? Do you know why? That’s because it’s strong, hard to get rid of and funny enough can be used for so many things. But it stays around for a long time, which is where the problem is. Only a small amount of the plastic we throw away gets recycled and this is on a worldwide scale, Not only in Nigeria . But don’t worry, there always cool way to give plastic waste a new purpose.

When we recycle plastic, we usually sort it into different types, clean it, and then melt it down. This melted plastic can then be used to make all sorts of new things, like new bottles, clothes, even bins and car parts. You probably see recycling symbols on things like water bottles and milk jugs, those are the types of plastic that are often recycled. Recycling is great because it helps us use less new stuff and keeps waste out of the ground. But not all plastics are easy to recycle, and sometimes we don’t have the right equipment to do it.

This is where things get really interesting! Upcycling means taking waste, like plastic, and turning it into something even better without melting it down. Think about plastic bottles becoming colorful pots for plants, or old shopping bags turned into trendy bags, or even plastic lids made into cool jewelry. Some Smart designers and companies are finding new ways to upcycle plastic. For example, I bet you didn’t know some pens are made from old plastic bottles, and even robes have been made from upcycled plastic. 

Science is also playing a major role in this by creating new technologies to change the plastic in old items to make new materials that are even better than before.

Lots of companies are doing amazing things with recycled and upcycled plastic. Like the famous Adidas makes shoes from plastic found in the ocean, you didn’t know that right?.  Some Clothing Company uses recycled plastic bottles to make a lot of their clothes. Others make beautiful rugs from plastic waste. And even for building, “a whole lot of opportunity all we have to do is be creative and put our imaginations to work”.

The use of plastic in the recycling industry is huge, and we can’t possibly cover all today. From the creation of new materials, fuels, and electricity, plastic holds immersive potential. So, I’m excited to share more about its potential over time.
